The National Taxi Alliance (NTA) is to embark on a national strike on Monday. The alliance cited frustration at government's failure to issue operating licenses and taxis ebing billed even though they are supposed to be exept from etolls. Taxi owner Dumisani Mpanza who owns six taxis says that he has received numerous text messages from Sanral despite being exempt from paying e-tolls. Mpanza indicates that some operators have bills of more than R 40 000. He adds that this is the reason why the NTA says it will go on a national strike. NTA says it will protest government's failure to issue operating licences to taxi drivers. The operating licences would make taxi drivers exempt from paying e-tolls. NTA spokesperson Theo Malele says that they are not happy that the government has stalled. However, the country's biggest taxi council, the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) says it will not join the protest. The strike looks set to affect the Bree street taxi rank, one of Johannesburg's biggest ranks. The NTA urged government to resolve the impasse.
