CAPE TOWN - Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Helen Zille says Agang SA's head Mamphela Ramphele has shown she cannot be trusted to see a project through to the end.
Rahima Essop & Stephen Grootes | The DA announced on Sunday night that Ramphele has 'reneged' on her agreement to stand as the party's presidential candidate.
In a bold move last week, Ramphele and Zille revealed that their parties were joining forces ahead of the elections.
In a statement released on Sunday night, Zille said it was rare for a political party to offer the position of presidential candidate to a leader from another party. Zille added they believed it would be in South Africa's best interest to have her as the presidential candidate. But during meetings with the DA's leadership to finalise the terms of the agreement, Ramphele said she was pulling out of the deal. Zille said the decision to pull out is a great pity and it wasn't clear what Ramphele's objective has been.
POLITICAL REPERCUSSIONS Zille could feel hugely embarrassed by how this has ended because Ramphele was her friend and she would've been personally involved in bringing her to the DA. Now, this has blown up in her face and she looks like she was simply desperate to get a black person to be her party's presidential candidate. But the repercussions for Ramphele could actually be greater. Her political career could well be over and her party will be furious that she didn't consult them. She has also shown that she can't be trusted by other political formations. Meanwhile, social network, twitter, was abuzz with people making the mickey out of the split.
